Photography Reflector

A photography reflector is a reflector that is used to add or subtract light from an object or scene that you are trying to photograph. A photography reflector (interchangeably called a photographic reflector or photo reflector) like this could also be used to film video, and could be utilized indoors or outdoors.

Many photographers use photographic reflectors to add the appropriate kind of light to their subject in order to get rid of unwanted shadows or shades. There are many different kinds of photo reflectors, but here are the basic types to keep in mind.

Silver photography reflectors really help to increase the specular highlights of your subject, resulting in an image with a higher contrast. It is great for things like product pictures, highly contrasted video, and black and white imagery, as well as for other things as well. You can get silver photographic reflectors pretty easily online at any store that sells photography gear, or  you can order it direct from a dealer. Either way, silver is a great color to start out with.

There are also gold photo reflectors, which products a neutral, even tone that bounces light to fill in for great indoor portraits and shots in the sunset. Black can be used, but this shade saps light instead of bringing it into the picture. This is usually used on a particularly bright object or subject to keep the light from being to predominant. If you are not careful, a subject that is too bright can white out your photographs, which is not productive or conducive to good picture taking at all.

Translucent fabric can also be used to diffuse light and product a broad wraparound which will result in an effect that is perfect for portraits taken outdoors.  This type of fabric is perfect for a lot of different applications, and is utilized professionally by a lot of prominent photographers and film makers.

One of the best ways, though, to utilize all of these advantages is to get a photo reflector set that includes all of them. These are available, and they are usually not too expensive. That way, you can carry them all with you at once, and have access to them constantly.

You can even use more than one reflector at a time if you need to. At least, you can if the particular model you are looking at allows you to detach them and use them independently, which is almost always the case.

Whenever you go to buy your reflectors for photography or any other sort of photo lighting or even a photography backdrop, make sure that you read some good customer reviews on them first; you can look at reviews of the models shown at the top of this page, in association with Amazon. You don’t want to buy reflectors that are junk, but you also don’t want to spend a lot on something when you can get something very similar for a lot less.
